Nebraska LB 201 has advanced to General File. Ask your State Senator why Nebraska should make reliquishing details of the family finances to the Nebraska Department of Education a requirement for students to graduate from high school.
This Bill lays out the need to complete FAFSA (Free Application to Federal Student Aid) as a high school graduation requirement for every Nebraska student. It sets up a cumbersome enforcement process that includes every school administration, the State Board of Education, and the Nebraska Department of Education, and the Clerk of the State Legislature.
It appears the State has a compelling interest in your pocketbook.
The Free Application for Financial Student Aid is useful for students who want to go on to college and want to apply for financial aid. Just like any other loan application, it asks a bunch of intrusive questions. If you are seeking financial aid, these are reasonable and necessary questions. They include:
Students and both parents’ Social Security Numbers
Citizenship questions
The bank balance, investments, and net worth of the family
The Student’s taxed and untaxed income
Tax returns of the parents and student
Any federal financial aid received by the family
For a student who will not be going to college, or does not intend to seek government aid, there is no reason why this private information should be relinquished. We have already established that school districts can not be trusted with personally identifiable information Here.
Ask your State Senator to kill LB 201. Requirements for graduation should be related to academics, not finances. The Nebraska Dept of Education, and school administrators, have enough on their plate without being forced to police the nanny state.
